No children for minorities
Chris and I were talking this morning about the Government's plan to deny gay couples the right to overseas adoptions (local adoptions remain the province of the States and Territories).
Chris pointed out that because gay couples are stigmatised, their children will be too. Further more, he said, any child of a minority couple is going to be stigmatised, bio-children even more so because they are genetically attached to the minority group. So really, it is very selfish of any sort of minority couples to have children. If only they would stop, all minorities would die out and there wouldn't be an issue any more.
In case you missed it:
Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said
"I think it's very important for all Australians to understand that the number of children available for adoption both here and abroad is very limited."
"To deny Australian families the opportunity to be able to participate in overseas adoptions while prioritising same sex couples would be a very sorry state of affairs."
By which he means that to allow gay couples the same access to international adoptions as straight couples would mean some straight couples might miss out (is that even true? I thought the cost was mostly prohibitive anyway) and since straight couples are clearly inherently more worthy that wouldn't be fair.
What he doesn't mean is that gay couples previously received priority over straight couples, and that they are just fixing that, even though that is what he implies - they're just making it fair, don't ya know.
"We are seeking to amend the law to put it beyond doubt ... that adoption will only occur in relation to heterosexual couples," he said.

(PS Just in case it was not abundantly clear: Chris was being sarcastic.)
